Sailing the luxurious Oceanis 48 is a joy.

The award winning super-large cockpit is a design borrowed from the Beneteau Sense series, the mainsail arch being the most striking feature.

The GRP structure runs the mainsheet on blocks and allows the sheeting to be further down the boom – giving you more control.

All lines/controls come back to the cockpit to make it easy to sail this yacht single or short handed.

The 48 includes a chine that rakes aft well above the waterline, which keeps the boat flatter under sail, adds interior volume, more stability, less angle of heel and greater speed.

The long, low deck profile provides great visibility and sheds water easily.

Experience a transom like no other. The award winning electric transom on the Oceanis 48 transforms the aft bench seat into a full-width swim platform at the push of a button, giving you easy access to the water and extending the large cockpit for extra outdoor living space.

Enjoy Mediterranean-style docking with a comfortable step from boat to dock.

Down the gently angled stairs is a spacious area bathed in natural light, thanks to large overhead hatches and cockpit facing windows illuminating the rear cabins, giving extra light to the portside galley.

A Fusion system delivers high quality surround sound throughout.

If you are chef for the day, enjoy the L-shaped galley and three-burner LPG stove, locker space, a top-opening 85 litre icebox and front-opening fridge/freezer.

Prepare meals for family and guests on an island-style bench adjoining the companionway, where twin sinks can be put to good use.

The team at Beneteau have made sure the Oceanis 48 can be tailor-made to suit your lifestyle and sailing needs.

Standard accommodation includes two or three cabins with two heads but you can also get the family version, with up to four cabins and four heads. Enter the spacious owners’ suite through double doors … this impressive private cabin is forward in all layout variations and has an oversized en suite and plenty of storage.

The new Beneteau Oceanis 48 blends fresh thinking, French design flare and, most importantly, proven Beneteau engineering.

And judging from a personal survey last summer, when I observed a bevy of new Oceanis 48s in marinas all around the Mediterranean, the world’s largest sailboat consortium has done it again and launched another winner.

And it’s easy to see why: The Oceanis 48 appeals on many levels and is clearly the look of sailing’s future.

This latest offering in Beneteau’s revitalised Oceanis line of family cruising boats was introduced at the Miami International Boat Show in February. Like the new Oceanis 45, which received a 2012 European Boat of the Year Award, the 48 immediately won some accolades and was tapped for a National Marine Manufacturers’ Association Innovation Award soon after the show opened.

Like the 45, the 48 combines some cutting-edge design elements from Beneteau’s new Sense line with a more traditional range of accommodation plans. In this larger footprint, the result is an exceedingly open, airy living space on a boat that is comfortable and easy to sail.

Tucked between the new Sense 55 and its award-winning 45-foot sister, the new Oceanis 48 presented herself well at the show docks, with the biggest draw being the electric transom, a feature she shares with both the 45 and the 41.

The third in the series, the 48 has a pushbutton electrically controlled transom that drops down to extend the cockpit nearly three feet.

In just 30 seconds, the hinged helm seat that runs nearly the full width of the beam opens out to create a swim platform complete with a stainless steel boarding ladder.
